Spring has sprung, depending on where you live the temps might not have gotten there yet, but it’s here. Unlike most people, I’m not a huge spring person. I’m actually a fall and winter gal these days. Crazy, I know. It takes me a while to get into spring. Partly because I got used to winter and it getting dark early and partly because we never have a traditional spring in Chicago. Sometimes I think we only have winter and summer in Chicago. I also feel that I never get to fully wear spring clothes.
Anyone else feel like that? Take this year, for example. Just last week I was wearing my puffer coat and had Elizabeth bundled in her 7 A.M. Enfant car seat cover. I actually love the car seat cover so I’m glad I get to keep using it 🙂 But warmer temps are on the horizon, because I have spring clothes to wear! And I’ll be wearing my top five key pieces for spring.
Spring symbolizes new beginnings and refreshed wardrobes. It’s time to shed the black wool turtlenecks (which I love) for lighter hues and fabrics. Spring means no socks and bare ankles! And if you’re lucky, it also means no coat.
I take the time each spring to look at my closet, clean it out and fill in any holes that are missing. This year is especially exciting as I’m not pregnant. Last year I entered late spring and summer as a pregnant gal and didn’t clean out my wardrobe. I knew I wouldn’t fit in it and didn’t know if I’d still like it a year later. Coming out of the clean up I noticed that I still needed a few key pieces for spring in the closet.
Given that I’ve refreshed my closet I wanted to share those details with you. Today I’m sharing with you the top five key pieces for spring along with several different price point options for each piece.
Navy Blazer
A navy blazer is a staple in a man’s closet and it should be one in a woman’s closet as well. The navy blazer covers all major dress styles, from casual to formal. It can be dressed up or dressed down to match the occasion and your mood.
While navy is a classic color, it’s not a color to which I typically turn. My blazer of choice is normally black. I recently invested in a camel color blazer (you can see my full post here ) and realized I didn’t have a good navy blazer on hand. When I cleaned out my closet and found a navy Gap blazer from 2006, I knew it meant it was time for an update.
I need a blazer I can wear on the weekends and to work. Maximizing my purchase by having several occasions to wear the piece is important to me. I don’t mind paying a little more for a quality piece if I know I am going to wear it often. It also means that I want to have the piece for several years. So selecting a classic piece vs. a trendy piece is key.
The blazer I recently added to my wardrobe is the going out blazer. It’s not a traditional blazer, but still classic. It’s collarless and fitted, two things I love. The collarless nature of the blazer lays flat on my upper back and neck and doesn’t get in the way of my hairline. Gals with short to medium length hair know what I’m talking about. Hair at this length grazes any collar you have on and messes up the bottom of your hair.
This particular blazer moves with you and doesn’t bunch up in the torso or sleeves. It’s probably because the sleeves are bracelet length. They sit right where your watch or bracelets are and look ultra feminine. Bracelet length is my new best friend. I have long arms so most blazers are a tad bit short on me anyways.

Distressed Jeans
Truth be told I bought my first pair of distressed denim last spring. Yes, it’s a bit embarrassing, but I’m a late bloomer. I actually have a full guide on how to buy distressed denim, you can find it here. This spring I’m focused more on the distressed hem, than I am on the distressing on the legs.
Yes you can DIY a distressed hem on your jeans, but I don’t trust myself to do that. I love a good craft, but distressing my own denim just takes it to another level. This is why I don’t mind spending money on a good pair of distressed jeans. I absolutely love the distressed hem look. It looks super chic and designer-like.
Pairing a distressed hem with any shoe will work. If you want to look super edgy go with a high pointy heel, like this one. If you are looking for a more laid back look, then pair it with leather sneakers. I just got this pair of Eccos and I love them! The grey is a great alternative to white, however this particular shoes comes in a white and blush too.
With a distressed hem anything goes. You can create the look you want and build the rest of your outfit around it. Here are some great distressed jeans at all price points.

Cream Camisole
The most basic staple in your wardrobe is a solid cream camisole. Would you believe I actually didn’t have one? I have tons of cream tops; long sleeves (the camp blouse is my favorite and its under $70!), short sleeves (love the sleeves on this top) and sleeveless (love the collar on this top) , but not one camisole.
The camisole is the most basic piece of clothing you can own. You can wear it as a layering piece under a sweater and let the bottom hang out a bit. Alternatively you can wear it alone on a hot summer day with a pair of shorts. A cream camisole can be worn solo and dressed up with accessories for date night too.
I added mine to my wardrobe specifically to wear with my navy blazer. I wanted a top that let a little skin show and also look super elegant at the same time. Doing the famous front tuck with this camisole completed the look I am going for with this blazer. I found these options for cream camisoles that would complete your key pieces for spring wardrobe.

Leopard Flats
If you don’t own a pair of leopard flats you need to get a pair this spring, end of story. I’ve been wearing my leopard flats for years. They are the one flat I turn to when I need a little something extra for my outfit. I actually have a pair of leopard heels that I wear in the office too.
So why do you need leopard flats? Did you know leopard is the new neutral? That’s a bold statement! When you think of neutrals you think of basic colors, like beige, black, grey and white. These basics can be mixed with any other colors, patterns or textures. The same goes for leopard. It’s the one animal print that has been around for years and has no plans of going anywhere soon.

Arm Candy – Cord Bracelet
It’s no secret that I believe your best body part to accessorize is your arm. If you didn’t know this then you must read my Style Your Stack Post, found here to see why I’m loving accessorizing your wrist.
My stack is pretty classic with a watch (mine has two parts actually, the face and band), cable bracelet and my new friendship bracelet from Monica Vinader. The bracelet is completely customizable so there is a style for everyone.
I love the daintiness of the bracelet and the flexible cord that makes up the bracelet. It is adjustable so it will fit any wrist size. I personally have very small wrists (and hands, which is odd for a girl that is 5’9) and I like to wear my jewelry tight on my wrist. I might be the only person out there that wants my disposable festival bracelet skin tight.
My friendship bracelet is rose gold with a mink cord (think taupe) and I enjoy the way it brings color to my usually solid silver wrist. Mixed metals are the way to go with jewelry. Matchy, matchy is so 2018 🙂 I’ve picked out some current options for you to mix and match and style your stack.
