National Air and Space Museum
This was hands-down one of the best stops of our trip. We easily spent two hours here exploring airplanes, spacecraft, and several interactive exhibits. If you’re traveling with curious kids, this is one of the top kid-friendly museums in DC.
U.S. Capitol Guided Tour
The Capitol tour lasted about 45 minutes and did an excellent job keeping the kids engaged. The guides shared interesting stories without making it feel like a history lecture. Before leaving, don’t skip the gift shop—it had some of the best patriotic souvenirs we found during our trip.
White House
While we didn’t tour the White House, we walked past it on our way to dinner. Seeing it in person was exciting enough for our kids and made for a fun family photo.

Washington Monument
Instead of visiting during the day, we stopped by after dinner. Seeing the Washington Monument beautifully illuminated at night was one of my favorite moments of the trip.
World War II Memorial
We spent about 30 minutes exploring the memorial, but the highlight for the kids was cooling off by sitting with their feet in the water. It was the perfect break after walking around the National Mall.
Lincoln Memorial
The Lincoln Memorial never disappoints. We admired the famous statue before letting the kids run up and down the massive steps—a simple activity that ended up being one of their favorite parts of the day.

National Building Museum
If you’re traveling with younger children, don’t miss the Building Stories Playground exhibit at the National Building Museum.
This enormous indoor playground features climbing walls, obstacle courses, basketball courts, giant building blocks, and interactive play spaces. Timed tickets are required, and your play session lasts one hour. It was easily one of the highlights of our Washington DC itinerary for families.
Don’t Skip These Family-Friendly Neighborhoods
Georgetown
We walked from the Lincoln Memorial along the Potomac River to Georgetown, which took about 30 minutes at an easy pace.
The adults enjoyed shopping and lunch while the kids cooled off at the Georgetown Waterfront Park splash pad. It was the perfect combination of sightseeing and downtime.
CityCenterDC
After dinner one evening, we wandered through CityCenterDC. The interactive public art installation kept the kids entertained, and they had a blast running through the water feature. It was a fun way to end a busy sightseeing day.
Getting Around Washington, DC
Ride the Metro
One of the unexpected highlights of our trip was riding the Metro. The trains were clean, affordable, and incredibly easy to navigate.
