10 Shoes Every Woman Needs In Her Closet

Before we jump into today’s post, 10 shoes every woman needs in their closet,  I want to take minute to talk about my outfit in this first picture.  Sadly, it’s from last year, but I love this dress.  I’ve found some great alternatives though and linked them below for you.  I always try to show you current outfits that I love, but sometimes I have to find you good alternatives.

Ready, set, go…how many pairs of shoes do you own?  You have to count every pair too, including all the flip flops you own.

My number is somewhere around 50.  Now that includes every pair of flip flops, every dressy shoe I own that I wear once a year, winter boots and all the others.  To be honest, I don’t need all of them. I can’t believe I just admitted that, but I want all of them. I like to have options, who doesn’t?

When I take a long hard look at my shoes I realized there are 10 shoes every woman needs in her closet.  I don’t know if I’m ever going to get down to 10 shoes, but I know I will always have these trusty pairs in my closet and you should too.  So lets explore!

Ballet Flat

Who doesn’t love a flat?  The round toe flat is more casual and allows room for your toes to fit comfortably.  This is a great shoe to wear during the day to run errands, go to brunch or commute to work.   Finding a comfy pair that you can wear for hours can be a challenge. I’ve gone through a ton of pairs, but found a few favorites.  Right now I can’t get enough of my Everlane Day Glove. They are true to the name and feel like a glove on your foot! It took a couple wears to really break them in, but now they are my go-to favorite.  Other favorites include the ones linked below.

Pointy Toe Flat

I consider the pointy toe flat to be a key piece in your closet.  I wear mine all the time, especially for work travel or on meeting days.  The pointy toe flat instantly dresses up your outfit and adds a level of chic to any look.  I wear these when I travel for work, as they are my back up plan. If for some reason the heel I am wearing that day starts to hurt I have an option to switch to this flat.  I can comfortably walk into a client meeting and still look put together in a dress and pointy toe flats.

I just don’t have one pair, I have multiple.  I need to have a black pair and I also need to have a fun animal print pair.  Notice how I said need and not want 🙂 Picking a classic animal print like leopard will ensure you will get your money’s worth and wear out of them. Pointy toe flats are definitely one of the 10 shoes every woman needs in her closet.

Knee-High Boot

I jumped on the bandwagon late (I’m technically a late bloomer so it’s normal) and got my first pair of knee-high boots last year.  My only thought was, “what took me so long?” Knee-high boots are amazing, as it opens up your wardrobe to dress and skirts in the winter and provides extra warmth.

I tend to have a hard time with taller boots because I have small feet and a normal size calf.  The calf width is usually the problem for me with taller boots. If that is the case look for a wide circumference on the boot.  Mine are from last year, but they have some great options for this year.

Gym Shoe/Street Shoe

Yes, I have gym shoes that I wear around town when I have no intention of working out.  I mix these gym shoes in with my street shoes when I’m going for a casual look. With jeans or athleisure you will for sure be styling in a great street shoe!

Classic Black Pump

Let’s get serious, I have about 4 pairs of classic black pumps!  I work in a formal office environment so I rotate my shoes. I also believe that a pointy toe pump creates a completely different look than a round toe heel.  I think you would all agree with me. And lets talk about the heel…so many options.

Heel height is a key factor in picking out a pump.  My number one rule when selecting heel height is that you have to be able to walk normally in it.  There is nothing worse than a fabulous pair of heels and a girl who can’t walk in them. Select a heel height you are comfortable with, it will make you look and feel like a million bucks.

Heel size is also an important factor in a heel.  The trend I’m loving right now is the thicker heel.  It offers more stability and is easier to walk in. If you get a thicker heel you might be able to get a higher heel.  Heel size and heel height go hand in hand. Find the perfect balance for you.

Nude Pump

Nude is the new black!  Nude heels go with just about anything, black or navy.  A nude heel actually makes you look taller. The nude color elongates your leg and slims it at the same time.  I tend to wear these more in the warmer months, but it’s a great option to breakup the black heel in the winter.

Booties

Booties…need I say more?  If you don’t have a pair of booties in your closet right now, why not?  I’m so obsessed with booties that I did a whole post about them, which you can find here. I’m gravitating towards a lower heel on my bootie this season for a couple reasons.  We live downtown and tend to walk everywhere, even at night. Walking in the lower heel is a bit easier.  I also haven’t found a good heel on a bootie that I like. So if you have any suggestions send them my way!

Strapy Sandal

A go-to sandal in the closet is a must have, no matter what climate you live in.  I live in Chicago and winter lasts for 6 months sometimes, but I never know when I’m going to jump on a plane to a warm getaway.  Having a go to sandal on hand is a must have!

Rain Boot

Rainy days aren’t fun, but they get a little better when you have a great pair of rain boots to wear.  I’ve flipped flopped between what type of rain boot I wear. I have a short Hunter boot on hand for cooler rain days.  I also have bootie type of rain boot on hand for warmer days. I’ve been wearing the bootie style one more recently as they tend to keep me cooler in the rain. Winter Boot

I could write a whole post on winter boots…and maybe I should!  I walk to work, so finding the perfect walking winter boot is a huge task every winter.  I have a few go-to’s that I keep on hand every year.

First up is the Shorty Hunter with a boot sock.  I tuck my pant leg into the boot sock and slip on the boot.  It provides enough warmth for my 1.5 mile walk to work in super cold weather.  I also have a tall pair of Hunters, but have stopped wearing these as they keep me too warm.  I didn’t realize that was a thing, but it is. However they are still a great option.

I also have a pair of Sperry fleece lined boots.  I usually wear these on the weekends, as they look a bit more stylish than the Hunters are are super easy to slip on and off.
