How To Style An Oversized Blazer

In true Later Ever After style, I’ve been super slow to adopt the oversized blazer into my wardrobe.  I like tight, fitted clothing.  I always have.  Tighter clothes worn correctly can make you look smaller rather than larger.  I’ve always shied away from anything oversized, because I don’t want to look larger than I am.  It’s just a natural human instinct.

Truth be told, my co-worker showed up to work last fall in this gorgeous oversized blazer over her black dress.  I stopped in my tracks and asked her to try it on.  We have that kind of relationship where I can try on her clothes.  In fact, we often show up to work dressed the same about three times a week.  When I put the blazer on I loved it, but didn’t think I could pull it off.  So I thought about it and waited 9 months and finally decided to add it to my wardrobe.  And here we are and I’m wondering what took me so long.

Blazers in general are great wardrobe staples.  They are timeless and if you find a well made one they will last for years.  Some of my most treasured pieces in my closet are blazers.  From fitted to oversized I have about 8.  Now any man would say they all look the same, but they are each unique and serve a purpose.  Did you know that the term blazer actually started in 1825?  Yes, that long ago!  It originally started out as the casual alternative to a coat.  I actually love wearing a blazer as a coat in the spring and fall.

The Oversized Blazer

The oversized blazer is a menswear inspired piece, which is why it is oversized.  While you can take an actual men’s blazer and wear it, I would suggest getting a women’s oversized blazer or boyfriend blazer.  These cuts will be tailored to a women’s body, but still provide the oversized looks.  In terms of sizing you need to keep the specific blazer in mind.  Each blazer is different so you should read the measurements and comments from other shoppers.  I personally always size down one size in anything that is labeled oversized or relaxed.  Doing this lets me have an oversized look, but slightly fitted.

Now the oversized blazer does needs a little dressing up before you head out the door.  Pairing it with the right pieces is key to making your outfit looking polished and feminine.

Cuff The Sleeves

Roll up your sleeves once or twice so your wrist is showing.  This will let your wrists show and avoid making the blazer look too long and not fitted.

Slouchy Sleeves

If you don’t like cuffing your sleeves, you can slouch them up above your elbows to create a feminine look.

Jeans

There are two types of jeans you should wear with an oversized blazer.  Skinny jeans and high waisted jeans, even better if they are both.  Pairing it with skinny jeans will balance out the blazer.  Tight on the bottom and oversized on the top is a great combo.

Tucked In Shirt

Anytime you can create a waistline and show it off you should.  Creating a waist slims you down while showing off your natural curves.  Tucking in your shirt will create a waistline and also slim down that layer.  The less puffiness the better when wearing an oversized blazer.

Oversized Blazer Outfit Ideas

Street Style

Take the oversized blazer super edgy and wear a graphic tee under it with some distressed denim and white sneakers.  In this instance I love the way the oversized blazer acts as a coat, its the ideal layering piece in the spring and fall.

Office Ready

This look is Inspired by my co-worker.  I love wearing a fitted black dress and an oversized blazer.  Step into your highest heels with this look to create a super feminine menswear look.  In addition, this is the perfect look to wear that little black dress that might be a bit tight.  The oversized blazer will cover it up anyways.

Classic Chic

The most classic way to wear the oversized blazer is with a pair of jeans, a white tank and sling back heels.  This is my personal favorite and one of the most practical ways.  I call this my desk to dinner look.  It’s ideal for casual Friday’s at work or  a night out for dinner and drinks.
