Define Your Own Life Timeline

Fall Reading List

Reading for fun is just like a riding a bike, you never forget how to do it and getting back at it after a long break always brings back memories.  When I was little I loved to read, I would read every night, turning the pages of Sweet Valley High or the Babysitters Club.  As I grew into young adulthood I slowly stopped reading and chalked it up to not having enough time.  I always thought I didn’t have the time to read, but I realized you actually have time for anything you want to have time for.  With that realization I slowly started to find time to read again, I started with a small goal of six books per year and now I surpass my goal every year.  Reading for fun brings back great memories of childhood, but it also keeps my brain growing as an adult.

With fall is creeping up on us and one of my favorite things to do in the fall is curl up with a good book and a hot cup of tea.  Whether I’m in the house or perched at my favorite park getting lost in a book there is nothing like escaping in a book for an hour or so.  For the most part I read fiction based books, they allow my mind to rest and let my imagination run wild.  I’ve been know to re-read a book from time to time if I fall in love with it.  The books below are definitely on my read twice list.  If you can even check them out just once I think you won’t be disappointed.

1. The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah

Set back in France during World War II, this novel chronicles the life of two sisters who are caught in life’s greatest battle.  Each sister is on her own journey, but tied to the other, how will they react and what choices will they make.  This book captivated me from the first page, I immediately connected with the characters and turned each page wanting to know more about their life story and their journey.  I personally love World War II movies and books and this book did not disappoint.  If you love France, World War II stories, or the human spirit then this book is for you.

2. This Was Not The Plan by Cristina Alger

Similar to the title, this was not my idea to read, my husband, Mike picked it up for me at the library.  Having no preconceived notions about the book I was shocked and hooked with the first couple of chapters and couldn’t put the book down, I actually read it two days. The book covers many different characters and their thirst for success and happiness, which they find in ways they weren’t anticipating.  You can feel the emotional roller coaster the characters are one and you want to route for them the whole time.  The human spirit is resilient and this book definitely highlights everything associated with that.

3. The Couple Next Door by Shari Lapena

This book will keep you guessing until the last page.  It’s a who did it of the couple next door and their family.  The characters in the book are easy to connect with and it’s easy to find commonalities with people in your everyday life.  The twist and turns don’t stop in this psychological thriller, the book is paced perfectly with low moments and intense build ups to the next.  If you are looking for a quick read and a good who done it, look no further.

4. All the Missing Girls by Megan Miranda

It’s hard to wrap your head around this book at first as it’s written backwards.  It took me a bit of time to get into it as I spent a great deal of time trying to figure out the sequence of events. About a quarter of the way through the book I got a good sense of how it was written and it was off to the races from there. The story is based on two young women who go missing from a small town decades apart, their stories are told in conjunction, in reverse.  A page turner to the end, this book tested my brain power and memory.

What are your favorite books, what is on your read twice list?  Any non-fiction book recommendations?
