Micellar Water – Should You Be Using It?

micellar water

Hello ladies!  Did you know that I find the best skin care products in the Wall Street Journal?  Yes, it sounds crazy, but I do.  From time to time they feature great skin care products.  My love for Skin Food started with them originally.  And my latest obsession, micellar water was in a weekend edition of the paper.

The article I read was super short, but caught my attention and had me researching it the same day.  Before I buy any products I do a lot of research to learn about the product.  I research anything from the benefits, the disadvantages and cost.

What You Need To Know

Here are the basic facts I found in my research.  These are the things that you should know about micellar water.  From the scientific facts to the basic everyday facts, these items will have you looking like a micellar wizard.

  1. It is pronounced my-SELL-ar
  2. Micellar water is made up of tiny balls of cleansing oil molecules (called micelles) that are suspended in water.  These micelles are attracted to dirt and oil.  So when using it, it pulls those elements from your skin without drying it out.
  3. Micellar Water removes makeup, cleans your skin and tones it all in one swipe.  You instantly cut down on products you need with this.
  4. It is gentle on the skin and won’t dry you out.
  5. Now micellar water isn’t new, it has been around for a very long time.  It originated in France (where all great skin care products come from) decades ago.  They used it because tap water was too harsh and dirty for their skin.
  6. Works best for people with normal, dry and sensitive skin as it is gentle and hydrating.  Oily skin types beware it may not clean your skin how you need it to. It can cause pores to become blocked and aggravate acne prone skin.

How To Use Micellar Water

Simply moisten a cotton square and wipe all over your face.  I suggest a cotton square because a cotton ball is small and has less surface area.  The micellar water will remove makeup and wipe off the grit from your face.  There is no need to wash your face after using it because micellar water doesn’t leave a residue behind like a makeup remover does.  Since there is no rinsing required this is great to use on the go.  You can use it before and after working out to quickly clean your face.

I’ve personally been using micellar water for a couple weeks now and I can say I am a fan!  It’s beyond easy to use and incorporate into my daily routine.  Like any product though, there is a kiss and dis and list.  Here is mine.

Kiss List

  • This is great for non-morning face washers.  Swipe your face with a cotton square and then apply your moisturizer.
  • It is great to touch up your makeup or any mistakes you make when applying it.  I personally get mascara everywhere.  Using a little micellar water on a q-tip fixes it in seconds.
  • Ideal for freshening up your foundation without re-doing your eye makeup.

Dis List

  • It won’t remove waterproof eyeliner or mascara and won’t remove heavy eye makeup.
  • Steer clear of facial wipes that say they contain micellar water.  If you read the ingredients it is such a small amount that it’s not worth it and you aren’t getting the full benefits of micellar water.

Types

Simple Micellar Water

This is a great starter brand and costs about $5.

Garnier Micellar Water

The best dupe for the original French brand Bioderma.  This is the one I picked up and it was only $7.

Bioderma

The original that started the craze and it costs $10.

La-Roche Pasay

This is one of the only scented products on the market.  I’m not a huge scent person so this doesn’t appeal to me.  It costs a bit more at $20.

Innisfree Hydrating Cleansing

This bottle has the best design.  You simply pump it from the top without having to pick up or shake the bottle.  The cost of this one is $14.

Biore Charcoal Cleansing

If you have oily skin then this is for you.  It has a charcoal component that extracts dirt from your pores. You can get this one for $9.

L’Oreal Paris

My research shows that this brand actually removes waterproof makeup.  I haven’t tried it yet though so I can’t confirm.  It costs $11.

Yes To Cucumbers

This is the most cost effective one on the market, I’ve seen it as low as $4.
