How To Style a Shirt Dress For Work

The shirt dress is easily the most popular dress of summer.  I have three and I even wrote a dedicated post styling it 10 ways (you can find the full post here).  I love that it is easy to wear, involves minimal effort to look great in it and that it’s a classic silhouette that looks good on all body types.  However my favorite feature of a shirt dress is that you can wear it just about everywhere, either casually or to work.

Hayden Dress

For the office my go to shirt dress is the Hayden Dress. It’s a cotton rib knit that is silky soft, like a jersey material, but has a bit of weight to it.  It has a loose structure that doesn’t hang on your body, but rather gently skims your curves.  Plus, it doesn’t feel too tight and more importantly you don’t feel the need to suck in all day long!

It comes in two colors, Everglade, which I am wearing in this post and Sea Salt.  Both colors are gorgeous, however I’m partial to the Everglade.  You can truly wear this color all year long; winter, spring, summer and fall.  Making it the ultimate piece that you can get your money’s worth from.  The material is wrinkle resistance, which makes it ideal for sitting all day in and still looking polished.  The only downfall of this dress is it is dry clean only.  I love the ability to machine wash everything, but will put that need aside for a gorgeous piece.

In terms of sizing, I sized up in this dress and went with the large and I’m glad I did.  If I went with the medium it most likely would have hugged my hips a little too much.

While you can wear a shirt dress alone (as is), I do like the ability to dress it up, especially for the office.   Let’s explore all the areas that go into dressing up the shirt dress for work.

Jewelry

The biggest trend of 2020 has been the layering of jewelry, whether it’s on your wrist or neck.  The focus is styling your stack.  On my wrist I always wear three bracelets.  My investment pieces like the David Yurman Cable Bracelet and the David Yurman Large Link Bracelet.  I’ve topped it off with my Monica Vinader Friendship Bracelet.  I love that you can pick out your cord color, bead color and shape.

I’m also stacking up my neck with three necklaces.  I’m taking advantage of the blank canvas of the shirt dress and have three varying lengths.  I’ve actually had these necklaces for years, but found some similar ones that are currently available.  I like this long necklace (great value for the quality) and it pairs well with this crescent necklace.  Have an adjustable length necklace, like this one, in your collection as it opens up options for you.  It gives you more options of pieces you can wear it with.

Shoes

I’m a classic round toe heel type of gal.  It’s what I grew up with and it’s still in style!  I like to mix in a chunky heel too once and in a while.  For a solid color shirt dress you can really go with any type of shoe (i.e. solid or print).  If you are going with a solid color shoe stick in the same color family as your purse.  While I could have gone with black shoes and purse for this look I opted for brown.  It really warmed up the look.  In terms of prints, animal prints are king right now, especially snakeskin and leopard.  I am in love with this snakeskin heel and this leopard heel.

Purse

To enhance the shirt dress, pair it with that investment bag.  This will offer another dimension to the outfit and enrich it.  You are really elevating your look when you add an investment bag.  Now keep in mind an investment doesn’t mean a $1,000 bag.  The word investment is all relative.  It can be a $50 bag or a $100 bag, whatever the price, you know if it’s an investment for you.  In my younger years, this Marc Jacobs bag was a HUGE investment for me.  I think I ate cereal for a month just to afford it.  And still to this day I love the bag!
