How To Set Up A Home Office In A Bedroom

home office

The last 5 months have been a complete blur and I think most of you can relate.  Things have changed so much and now our family of three is working and living in the same space 24 hours a day.  There is zero separation from work and personal life because everything happens in the same room.  I decided to create a new environment and set up a home office in a bedroom.

I’ve always been a big believer of keeping things separate.  I have zero personal artifacts in the office (when I went to it) and I have zero work items at home.  I like to keep things separate.  Since I’ve been working from home since March everything is everywhere.  I have no defined work space and I work at the kitchen counter most days.

Living in a Chicago condo has its benefits, but it also has it downfalls.  The main downfall being that I don’t have a defined office space.  All my spaces have to pull double duty.  While the bedroom isn’t the most ideal space to have an office, it does have a door that shuts and a little extra room.  Which is why I’m sharing how to set up a home office in a bedroom.

No matter the size of your bedroom you can most likely carve out a small area that will be the office.  You may need to get creative with your space and move a little furniture around.  In addition you need to style the desk and outfit it for the ultimate efficient workspace.

Setting Up the Room

The best spots for a desk are the corner of the room, a nook or a bare wall.  If you can face natural light that would be ideal.  The natural light will improve your mood and provide the best lighting to look great on video calls.  If you can’t find natural light the next best option is somewhere out of the way, like a nook.  And finally, if neither of those exist find a bare wall.  Whether it’s next to a dresser next to the bed, they have small desks that will fit the space.  Keeping reading for a few suggestions on desks.

Desk Accessories

Your desk should be clean and simple.  You are technically sleeping in this room so you don’t want to clutter it with stuff all over your desk, but you want it to look warm and inviting.  Obviously your computer needs to be on the desk.  Less is more when it comes to desk accessories. Here is what I suggest you keep on your desk.

  • Leather notebook – Take notes during the day and use it as decor at night
  • One Pen – Yes only one, you can only use one pen at a time anyways
  • Succulents – Tiny plants brighten up any space, I have a bunch around the house
  • Coffee Cup/Water Bottle – You can never have too many liquids.  Drink out of these during the day and take them to the kitchen to clean up at night.

Clean Up Every Night

The biggest secret to keeping a functional home office in a bedroom is to clean it up at night.  You don’t want to go to sleep looking at your work sitting there and you don’t want to wake up looking at it either.  You need to keep it tidy and cleaned up when you aren’t working.  Trust me, it will improve your quality of life.  It will also make the small space “office” appear to be part of the bedroom vs. a makeshift space.

Home Office Essentials

Picking out the best pieces for your bedroom office will create a great space.  Having core essentials that are minimalist will go a long way for your bedroom office.  The desk I use for the bedroom office is actually very old and not sold anymore (but this is the current version).  However it is simple and classic and it’s on wheels, which I love.  I can literally wheel it from room to room 🙂

Desk

I’ve pulled a few desk options that I love right now and have actually eyed for years.

  • Modern Desk  – This modern desk has two levels, which is great for storage for a small space.  You can store notebooks, pens and other things on the bottom level of the desk and use the top part to work.  It’s such a great desk.
  • Writing Desk  – By design this desk has a small footprint and it is perfect for an office bedroom.  It has a small footprint and is ideal for just working.  Space is limited on this desk, so it won’t be able to load it up with junk.  I love how this writing desk is so modern.
  • Wall desk  – The wall desk is my favorite because it is uses vertical space.  You can style the shelves of the wall desk.  This type of desk creates extra space, as you  are using the vertical space on the wall.  It also provides extra room to style the shelves with flowers, frames and other jolifiers.
Seating

There are plenty of options for chairs, but I am focusing on two types of chairs.  First up, traditional office chairs.  I like this type of chair because it offers great support and you can lower the seat and slide it under the desk when you are not sitting in it.  It will create extra room in the small space by getting it out of the way.. I’d go with a modern looking chair, like this one.

The other kind you can get is the pretty chair.  It might not be the most comfortable, but it looks so good!  I’m in love with this one because you can customize it to fit your exact decor.  If you search dining chairs on most sites you can find really cute ones, like this blush color one.

Dream Office

If I could start from scratch I would have a modern office, with grey and blush accents.  It would look a little something like this.  If you like what you see click on any of the pictures below to be taken to the item.
