Modern Half Bathroom Remodel

Modern Half Bathroom Remodel

It’s here! Today I’m sharing our modern half bathroom remodel with you.  When we bought our condo a couple of years ago we always knew we were going to update the bathrooms over time.  And 2 years into living here, it was time!

We grouped this half bathroom remodel with our master bathroom remodel (which will be coming to the blog soon) and over all the project was scheduled to take 6 weeks but actually took 11 weeks.  Needless to say, I wasn’t happy on the timing and I learned a ton about working with a contractor.  The majority of the issues were with our master bathroom so you will have to wait for that post to get all my tips.

Modern Half Bathroom Remodel

The half bathroom is the jewel box of your home.  It’s the one room that literally every guest will see in your house so you want it to be a showcase piece.  The inspiration for our half bath was a modern hotel vibe.  As you know, I love hotels!  From the lobby bar to the rooms, hotels are so much fun.  There is something intriguing about hotels and the decor of the hotel matters to me.  I want to stay in a hotel that is clean, modern and sleek.  And that is what you will find in my half bathroom.

Before

Sadly, I didn’t take my own photo of the half bathroom before we redid it.  So this photo is from the original listing when we bought the condo.  The only previous update we did was paint it a light grey color and it still looked pretty bad.  The floor was a brown taupe and the light grey color really didn’t go with it all.  I was pretty happy to see this room get redone.

After

Tadaaa, here it is!  I’m in love with it and so happy with everything we picked out.  My favorite part is the wallpaper.  I might wallpaper the whole house now.  Let’s check out all the details now!

Mirror

I’ve had my eye on this mirror for over a year, I just needed to find somewhere to put it.  It is sleek, modern and minimalistic.  I love that the frame is thin and you really just see the bulk of the mirror.  I went with the oil rubbed bronze as I like the dark moody vibe it offered.

Lighting

I wanted a single light/lamp for the vanity.  We previously had a double light fixture and I didn’t care for it.  I wanted to have an updated piece that was modern and hefty.  This fixture fit my vision perfectly.  It’s a 3000K LED, which may mean nothing to you.  But when selecting an LED light, you will discover the color temperature (known as kelvin) typically ranges between 2700K and 6500K.  The chart below is a helpful explanation. We went with 3000K because we wanted a warmer light but still bright enough for the bathroom.

Hardware

Modern Half Bathroom Remodel

I stuck with the oil rubbed bronze theme after careful debate for the towel and toilet paper holder hardware.  Originally I bought these items in chrome and then changed my mind.  I loved carrying the dark moody accents throughout the whole bathroom.  The end look is gorgeous.  The towel bar I used can be found here and the toilet paper holder can be found here. The line is called Yaquin and it comes in four finishes, so you have options!

Vanity

The majority of the furniture in our home is from Room & Board.  I love their clean modern style and decided to go with a vanity from there as well.  You can find the actual vanity here.  It is the Hudson, in maple with a charcoal stain and a graphite base.  I opted for the silver knobs to make the whole cabinet pop! I love that you can customize it to fit your aesthetic.

Faucet

A faucet is such a simple thing, but there are so many to choose from.  I went with a simple and sleek faucet from Grohe in chrome, you can find it here.

Wallpaper

I was so excited to wallpaper this room.  I grew up in a wallpapered home and it has a soft place in my heart.  Wallpaper has come such a long way though.  While I like patterned wallpaper, I love textured wallpaper.  It adds another layer of depth to a room, especially a small room.  The wallpaper I choose is by Brewster and is Essence Grey Linen Texture Wallpaper, you can find it here.

Toilet

half bathroom remodel

I can’t believe how excited I was for this toilet.  You know you are old when a toilet is beautiful to you.  Our previous toilets were just ugly and didn’t flush well.  This Toto toilet is the opposite though.  It flushes nicely, it sits tall and has beautiful lines.  You can find the exact toilet hereWe bought everything at Studio 41 and were able to get a much better deal than the price listed on the internet.

Flooring

I went with a hexagon shaped tile because it is modern with a hint of vintage style.  My grandma had tile like this in her house (in black and white) and I loved it as a kid.  It brings in a clean, fresh classic vibe to this bathroom.  It’s also a tile that the major hotels in Chicago use so it fits perfectly with my original vision.

Now the bathroom still needs artwork, but I’ll take my time finding that.  I most likely will stick with something modern, black and white and potentially abstract.  More to come when I pick out a piece.  Stay tuned for our master bathroom remodel soon on the blog!
