Winter Coats for Chicago Weather

winter coats

I consider myself to be an expert in a lot of things, but Chicago winters tops the list. I grew up in the suburbs and have lived in the city for the past 15+ years. There is one thing that is consistent growing up in Chicago, and that is the winter! Over the years winter has changed, but at some point it will get cold, like freezing cold! Having the right winter coats for Chicago weather is the only thing that will get you through.

Winter as a kid was different, it was cold and it snowed, period. However as an adult I’ve found that winter in Chicago can be below zero temps or 60 degree days. It’s kind of insane! Having the right coat for all of that weather is a challenge and you can’t accomplish it with just one coat. You need several.

Puffer

The warmest of winter coats, the puffer, gets me through the coldest of days. I usually break it out when temps get to 30 degrees and can wear it well into the below zero temps. Puffer jackets are the warmest, but also the most expensive. I invested in a Marmot 3-in-1 jacket a few years ago and it was the best winter coat investment ever.  While it cost almost $500, I’ve gotten a ton of use out of it.

Wool Dress Coat

I like to have a fancy coat for winter. I typically wear it to work (if it’s not freezing), out at night, or if I’m head to an event during the day. Wearing a dress coat makes me feel polished and put together.

Lightweight Winter Coat

My lightweight winter coat is best for temperatures in the 40s and above. I will even wear it when it reaches 60, like it did last week. I’m becoming weak and can be seen wearing my lightweight winter coat on spring days!
