There’s something about summer that calls for the open road—and this year, we answered by packing the car and heading south for a scenic road trip to Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Nestled at the edge of the Great Smoky Mountains, Gatlinburg delivered everything we hoped for in a family getaway: stunning views, charming downtown vibes, and Dollywood! There was something for everyone on this Great Smoky Mountains vacation.
We made a few fun stops on the drive—Lexington, KY on the way there and Louisville, KY and Chattanooga, TN on the way back—but Gatlinburg was the heart of our trip. I’m sharing our full 10 day itinerary with all the details of what we did and where we stayed.
Nature, Trails, and Views

We spent a couple days exploring the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. We picked easy trails that my 3 and 6 year old could handle. Our favorite kid friendly spots included:
- Sugarland Nature Trail – A flat, easy trail for little kids, my 3 year old walked the whole time. It leads up to…
- Cataract Falls – It’s easy to get up close to the falls and touch it
- Clingman’s Dome – A paved incline trail that leads you to a lookout tower in the clouds. We brought the stroller for our 3 year old and she used it. It’s a pretty big incline, but the views are worth it. Coming down is harder than going up!
- Greenbrier Picnic Area – Bring your swimsuit and get into the Little Pigeon River for a memorable time. With several spots to stop along this area to swim, it was a highlight of our trip. Be aware of the water and take caution on the rocks, they are slippery! I’d suggest water shoes, we didn’t have any and wished we did.
Downtown Charm and Family Fun
Downtown Gatlinburg was full of simple pleasures: homemade fudge shops, old-school pancake houses, minigolf, and a ride on the chairlift up to Annakeesta. Its a mountain top adventure park that had to much to offer. From skybridges, playgrounds, food and entertainment, we spent a full day up here. The lines get long to get up the mountain so go early in the morning.
Staying at Embassy Suites Gatlinburg
Instead of a cabin, we opted for the Embassy Suites Gatlinburg—and it was the perfect choice for our family for this Great Smokey Mountain vacation. The hotel opened in 2024 and was still very new for our stay. The rooms were spacious, modern, and ideal for traveling with kids. Our suite had separate sleeping and living areas, giving us room to spread out. The property has an indoor and outdoor pool, lazy river, spacious grass with lawn games and a huge patio with lounge chairs and sofas. I loved the complimentary breakfast every morning and nightly managers reception with snack and drinks. Embassy Suites felt like a true home base. It was family-friendly, comfortable, and a bit more luxurious than we expected. And it was a short walk to downtown Gatlinburg. Beware though the walk home is harder, its up hill.
Dollywood

Did you know that Dollywood has been named the best theme park by National Amusement Park Historical Association for the third year in a row. Now that we went I can see why, I loved it there! The park is laid out nicely and easy to completed in full day. There is plenty of food options, misters to stay cool and the grounds are super clean and cared for. Here are my tips for a great trip to Dollywood:
- Crowds are lowest on Sunday’s and Wednesdays
- Arrive at 10am when the park opens
- Nightly fireworks and drone show start at 9:40pm and are best viewed from Wildwood Grove
- Preferred parking is the way to go. Its $50 (vs. $25 for standard) and will save time. The parking lot is laid out pretty weird here and general parking requires a tram to get to the entrance gates, which takes a while.
- Cinnamon bread is sold at the Grist Mill inside the park. Get one to eat there and one to take home.
- Cups for water are offered at every drink station free of charge
The Kind of Trip You Don’t Forget
This trip wasn’t about checking things off a list. It was about slowing down, seeing new places, and being together. If you’re craving a family road trip full of nature, charm, and connection, Gatlinburg should be at the top of your list. It’s a place where time slows down—and that’s exactly what made it so special. Check out our full itinerary below for a Great Smoky Mountains Vacation.
