Best Toys For 2 Year Olds

toys for 2 year olds

We have a 2 year old in our house!  Wow does time fly by so quickly!  Lizzie was born in January a couple weeks after Christmas, which makes shopping for her extra hard. Those are two big celebrations so close together and I want her to have fun on each day.  However, I don’t want to overload her with things she doesn’t like or need.

The biggest struggle I have as a parent is wanting to give her everything in the world, but not spoiling her and teaching her how to be grateful and appreciative for everything she has.  That’s a little hard to do when her birthday and Christmas are so close together.  My trick, I give her a fair amount of presents for each; Christmas and Birthday, and then I hide half of the presents and bring them out throughout the year.

Toy Features

My main objective for the best toys for 2 year olds is for them to capture her attention and get her little mind working.  I also love toys that are interactive.  Lizzie loves to sing and figure out how things work, so toys that encompass that are a winner for me.  And finally, I love toys that allow Lizzie to imitate our actions.  She follows us around so much and loves to do the simple tasks we are doing, so having a toy that is her size lets her play just like us.

Best Toys For 2 Year Olds

My secret weapon for buying toys for Lizzie is to always add them to my online cart and save them for later.  Throughout the year I add items to my cart, whether I see them on a targeted ad or someone’s social media account, I add them to my cart.  This saves me time when it’s time for a holiday or a birthday, I’ve already come up with the idea and have done the research.  I simply look at the items together and pick out my favorites and also earmark them for Christmas or birthday.  I might say it’s a genius idea!

Here is everything that I love for a 2 year old.  Everything included in this best toys for 2 year olds post are mom and Lizzie approved.  Some of them are currently in hiding to be pulled out later in the year.

Play Kitchen and Accessories

Purchasing this kitchen was 10 times more stressful than purchasing my home.  Seriously!  I researched this kitchen for so long and compared it to so many others.  My search led me to the KidKraft Uptown Kitchen and I’m so happy with my choice.  I mainly picked this because of the size, it’s taller than most of the play kitchens out there.  In addition to that it had a lot of fun things for Lizzie, like doors, knobs that make noise and hooks.

Keurig Machine

Making coffee in the morning is a family event and with this little set Lizzie can make herself a cup too!

Tent

Best value right here!  While I loved the Pottery Barn tents, it was NOT worth the price.  This tent is spacious, adorable and Lizzie loves it.  And its less than $25!

Little People School Bus

Anything on wheels is a favorite for any little kid.  In fact, this bus has the right amount of music and lights to keep a kids attention

Mrs. Potato Head

This is one of those toys that will be around forever!

Hand Puppets

These capture her attention and also let her creativity run free.

Dr. Seuss Books

Board books are life for us.  They are almost indestructible and she can use them by herself or I can read to her.   You can find these here.

Water Wow Books

We use these books for restaurant toys.  I’m a strict no iPad or iPhone while eating person so I have to use other things to entertain her.  In addition, these books are great at restaurants, as there is no mess.

Bitty Baby

I couldn’t wait to get Lizzie her first American Girl Doll.  It took a while to warm up to the baby, but she loves to feed her, change her diaper and give her a hug now.  It’s really so sweet!  The Bitty Baby is fully customizable too, so you can pick one that looks like your child.

I found the cutest company on Instagram from a fellow mom.  She has acrylic letters and flashcards to help excite your little one about learning.  You can find all her products here

Lego Duplos

Dad pick FTW!  Mike knew that these would be a big hit and they are.  In fact, Lizzie loves to build with these and knock them down over and over.

Daniel Tiger Trolley

If your 2 year old isn’t watching Daniel Tiger then they need to be.  In fact, I love the classic lessons and the wholesomeness of the show and toys.

Fat Brain Toys Squigz

Great toy for any 2 year old.  They stick on just about every surface and are also great in restaurants too.

Fisher Price Play Purse

This is great toy that lets Lizzie duplicate what mommy is doing.  It also comes with keys, a bracelet, cell phone and a credit card.  She loves to play with the phone and say “This is Amy” because that’s how I answer the phone.

Sensory Table, Storage Bins  and Chairs

Another purchase I agonized over for months!  I wanted a sensory table to have a small footprint, storage and also a built in paper for coloring.  I found two out of the three requirements in this IKEA Flisat Table and it is so perfect!  In addition, these are the bins that I added to the table to store toys and crafts.  I’ll be sharing how I added craft paper to this table soon to make the table the ideal table for any 2 year old.  I  rounded out the table with these retro chairs which fit underneath nicely.
